In addition to what you can see and interact with in Windows 11, there are also improvements and conveniences Microsoft made under the hood. Some of these could eventually sell Windows 11 all by themselves.

Microsoft told users of three ways that performance will improve under Windows 11 : foreground prioritization, sleeping tabs within Edge, and quicker resumption from sleep. Performance can be measured in several ways. In terms of actually running apps, our early performance benchmarks of Windows 11 indicated that there was not an enormous difference from Windows 10, within expectations. Those observations were in line with what we saw as development continued.

Some apps just loaded more slowly than we expected, compared to Windows That flies in the face, somewhat, of what Microsoft calls foreground prioritization, a fancy name for simply giving the apps you want to work on their fair share of CPU and memory resources. Microsoft has previously showed this off by opening Word and Excel while a resource-intensive application was already running in the background.

Sleeping Edge tabs make a difference, too. As you probably know, many browsers preserve a row of tabs while closing them, including Microsoft Edge. In one test I tried, I took my window of 35 tabs, closed it, and restarted Edge. Those 34 tabs required 1. After clicking on all of them to put them in an active state, they required 4. Implementing this on the PC in some fashion would be a decided plus for PC gaming, especially if we see something similar to Quick Resume.

DirectStorage support will be present in Windows 11 at launch, Microsoft has told us. Games that implement DirectStorage will be compatible with Windows 10 version or later, too. Dynamic Refresh Rate is another Windows 11 feature that utilizes a high-refresh-rate display above 60 Hz for inking.

We know that eventually Android apps will be integrated in Windows 11, probably looking quite a bit like the Linux apps running in the Windows Subsystem for Linux and the Android apps in the Your Phone Companion app. Will Android apps have access to the camera, for example? Will they go full screen? Microsoft still has some bugs and other issues to fix, too. Essentially, Microsoft places the most disconcerting aspects of Windows 11 front and center, while its best features are hidden deeper within.

That puts Windows 11 at a marked disadvantage out of the gate. Defending Windows 11 means trying to explain why Windows 11 robs certain functionality from the Start menu and Taskbar, while adding frankly extraneous apps like Widgets and Teams Chat.

And, of course, the hardware support controversy and issues with local accounts in Windows 11 Home muddy the waters further. Windows 11 is absolutely usable in its current state, and, like Windows 10, will improve over time. With Windows 10, Microsoft discarded the troubled tiled interface of Windows 8 and strode boldly forward into an optimistic future of biometric logins and virtual assistants. Windows 11 feels practical and productive, but less so than its predecessor in many aspects.

Microsoft lost some of its magic along the way. This story was updated at AM on Oct. Horizontal lines underneath the icons indicate how many windows are available to each app, but numeric badges are also used for email. You can left-justify the Windows 11 Taskbar to push it more in line with the traditional Start menu.

Fortunately, the caret menu to the right of the date can minimize it. The front page of the Windows 11 Settings menu. There are some nice touches here: the desktop theme at the top of the page, and the status of OneDrive and Windows updates. Microsoft has had years to refine the Settings menu, and it shows.

There are Search boxes all over Windows Any user accessing the system through a logon process has the Authenticated Users identity. This identity allows access to shared resources within the domain, such as files in a shared folder that should be accessible to all the workers in the organization.

All interactive, network, dial-up, and authenticated users are members of the Everyone group. This special identity group gives wide access to a system resource. Authenticated users means exactly that - any and all users which have authenticated to the system. That would be any user that is a member of any group on your local system. In a domain environment this would be any user that is a member of any group on the domain. So if the file system is NTFS and Mike is denied write privilege's in one group then he should be denied write privilege's in all groups because a deny overrides an allow.

So it won't matter what access Mike is given from the pseudo group Authenticated Users if the Deny box is checked in the Users group for write or whatever else. I get your point of why doesn't it show all groups and can't answer that more than other have, but at least you known someone won't have a certain permission by using deny.

The samba clients seems to try to connect using SMBv1, which therefore fails.

In my case I also had to put a password on my Samba user s , but I think that was my specific system problem. Windows 10 then drops the connection. I disabled SMB3 in my Samba server and it worked like a charm.

The Samba shares were also opened on a Windows device. After trying to connect to the same share on the CentOS8 install with the same credentials configured I couldn't login to the share anymore.

Still I got the message that my credentials were incorrect. I was fiddling with this last step for so long until I tried on another Windows 10 device and it worked right away. Just wasted a few hours trying to fix this with Windows 10 and Ubuntu Do add this step to your checklist. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top. I think I have a solution that works on Windows 7 - 10 and on Server In my case commenting out my line "smb ports " helped.

I hope it helps someone. I can't comment yet I just wanted to add that I followed the steps from traintes' solution , but if you want to avoid getting the error when restarting the pc, you can follow these steps before restarting:. There is a much faster and easier way. As usual, Windows NT got it right, but Microsoft just keeps making trivial UI tasks harder and harder as they try to cater to the fringe tablet market.

Luckily the old apps are still available. Open the Start menu, type comp and select Computer Management , expand Local Users and Groups , right-click Users to a new local account there, then click Groups and open the Administrators group and add the new account.

Log off, log in with the new account. The account name will be used to create a new folder in Users. You can copy whatever you need from the old user folder, then delete the old user account from the same app or that "Family" thing in Settings. Re-link to your MS account if you wish. The other answers are quite useful but I'd like to add that many many things including the ability to uninstall any programs that were locally installed will be broken until you properly migrate all your registry keys and values.

There were some errors but it mostly worked. I tried to review what was being edited, but there are thousands of entries so I had to skim. They fortunately group up so that you can skip similar entries when reviewing. I managed to get that Windows 8 tutorial to work for myself by logging into the second admin account in safe mode I used "Safe Mode With Networking" myself; the precise methods used to get your version of Windows 10 into Safe Mode may be different.

Safe Mode prevents OneDrive from loading, among other things. This won't catch everything in files, obviously; when I rebooted after doing the second search and replace, OneDrive complained that its home directory had been deleted, among other things. Everything seemed to work after that, though. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top. And why? Seems silly to me. Got a Surface Book, I'm here because I noticed the same issue. What a freaking annoyance, trimming two letters off the user name I've used for two decades. It should at least ask before doing this, and offer the user to change it. Show 13 more comments.

This can be done without folder renaming and messing with registry: Create a local account with the user name you wish. Following these steps and then relinking my Microsoft Account created yet another User directory with my machine name appended to the end of it. One caveat, if you use "Family safety" set up in your microsoft account, this can get very tricky at 4 if you want to do it for other family members.

The other family members become "known" to the PC as soon as you convert the first account, and I hit a full-stop when converting the other local users. Rarely, some settings may even be tied to the old username.

What is the purpose of the "Authenticated Users" group in Windows? Under Linux it doesn't exist and I'm starting to think this is another idiosyncrasy or over-engineering of the Windows operating system. I therefore assume the user mike belongs to group Users only, so I will check the security tab with a right click on the disk C and will see that users belonging to the "Users" group cannot modify the disk c but only read it. Can someone confirm the above story, comment whether it makes any sense or as I doubt it is a case of over-engineering and elaborate on the reasons behind this?

There are a number of special groups in Windows. These days, Everyone and Authenticated Users are effectively equivalent for most purposes, but if you had a pre domain level domain that would not be true. In any event, there is no way to observe the membership of these groups. A more appropriate setting would be Interactive Users or, if you're locking down workstations, read only.

Any user accessing the system through a logon process has the Authenticated Users identity.

Excuse my ignorance, but why can't the command net know that mike also belongs to another group? The plural in "Local Group Memberships" makes me think it should be able to see all groups to which mike belong.

That's exactly my point, it should list all groups but it doesn't! My "the command net cannot know it but mike also belongs to the Authenticated Users group" is a stating of the facts under Windows 7. Show 1 more comment. Sorted by: Reset to default.
